Mumbai
Mumbai, previously known as Bombay, the capital of Maharashtra state, is the largest, fastest moving, most affluent and industrialized city in India. It is a part of India’s wonderful west coast which starts at Gujarat and follows the coast down through Mumbai to Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. This vibrant cosmopolitan city is a frantic mélange of India’s extremes, of 21st century technology, Victorian buildings and a myriad of temples and mosques.
Mumbai is the financial centre of India, home to the country's largest stock exchange and the heart of its banking industry. It handles nearly a third of India's foreign trade and is host to a large number of foreign multinational companies. As a result of the extreme growth of the city, a new urban district called Navi Mumbai (New Mumbai) has been created. Navi Mumbai is a very fast growing district with millions of citizens and a large number of IT companies.
Mumbai has a relatively hot and humid climate, which is only partly relieved by the annual arrival of the monsoon between June and September. The city is the fashion central of India, as well as home to the Indian film industry (Bollywood) and energetic night life. Mumbai has a varied and fascinating history, and has many reasons to face the future with confidence.
