Chennai

Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, and is India's fourth-largest city. It is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. The history of British settlement in India has its ancient roots here. This has resulted in some splendid monumental municipal buildings and a number of broad avenues and gardens. The city retains much of its original charm and provides a captivating insight into southern heritage.

Chennai is proud of its Tamil culture and in many ways is still conservative, lacking the cosmopolitan flavour and night life of Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. Also, there are no major attractions as such; however it does have the second largest beach in the world, the Marina Beach.

Chennai has experienced very fast growth over the past few decades and has enjoyed industrial expansion in recent years, thanks mainly to a booming IT industry. The pace is much slower than in most Indian cities half its size. Chennai is actually so relaxed that it is hard to recognize that it is an economic powerhouse. It is a vibrant city that has managed to strike a beautiful balance between the modern and the traditional, a metropolis with a distinct old world charm.
